In memoriam: Dr. Philip Branton
We are saddened to learn of the passing of esteemed cancer researcher Dr. Philip Branton.
Dr. Branton was a cancer virologist with Université de Sherbrooke, McMaster University, and McGill University. When CIHR was created in 2000, Dr. Branton was appointed the inaugural Scientific Director of the Institute of Cancer Research. While serving in this role, he founded the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance, an organization that works strategically to coordinate and collaborate on most of the cancer research conducted in Canada. Dr. Branton was a natural at bringing people together in support of a common cause, and he used this collaborative approach to support research to uncover the factors that cause cancer and discover better treatments to improve patient and survivor outcomes.
Known for his kindness, humour, and leadership ability, Dr. Branton received many prestigious appointments and awards during his career, including being named a Member of the Royal Society of Canada, his reception of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and becoming an Officer of the Order of Canada.
All of us at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research offer our deepest condolences to Dr. Branton's family and friends.
