Message from the Scientific Director: October 2024

This month marks six months since I joined ICRH as Scientific Director. Our team at ICRH is growing steadily with outstanding people. I am so grateful to be able to carry out our work surrounded by exceptional colleagues, partners and collaborators motivated to advance innovative research in circulatory and respiratory health across Canada and around the world. I look forward to continuing to advance the institute's mandate as we expand our science strategy.

The ICRH team has been busy over the past weeks! In late August, we attended the Global Cardiovascular Researchers Funder Forum (GCRFF) Board meeting in London to discuss upcoming initiatives spearheaded by the group, including the International Research Challenge on Women's Cardiovascular Health that was officially launched by ICRH and their GCRFF partners at the European Congress of Cardiology (ESC).

In September, we held our first in-person Institute Advisory Board (IAB) meeting in Toronto with a group of outstanding individuals from across Canada. Throughout the day, the IAB members engaged in meaningful discussions, including the evolving Canadian science landscape and setting the stage for the ICRH's research priority planning.

We also had the opportunity to participate in the Canadian Lipid and Vascular Summit, where we presented the 2024 CIHR-ICRH/CSATVB Lectureship Awards in Blood and Blood Vessel Sciences. The Distinguished Lectureship Award was presented to Dr. Patricia Liaw and the Mid-Career Lectureship Award to Dr. Jason Fish. At the 2024 Canadian Cardiovascular Conference we also presented the 2024 CIHR-ICRH/CCS Lectureship awards in cardiovascular sciences to Dr. Dennis Ko (Distinguished Lectureship Award) and Dr. Marie-Annick Clavel (Mid-career Lectureship Award).

We are now launching our knowledge exchange tour to inform the development of the Institute's 2025-2030 Research Priority Plan (RPP) that will guide the Institute's work. We created an online survey for ICRH community as we engage stakeholders across Canada. We hope to achieve an RPP that has been constructed iteratively as we listen to our thought leaders articulate what they would like us to incorporate in a science vision for Canada. We also invite you to join upcoming town hall meetings across the country as well as online focus groups where we will be gathering input into the Institute's 2025-2030 RPP. More information will be published on our website in the coming weeks.

Dr. Ariane Marelli,
On behalf of our ICRH Team
